19 Jun Spring Interns 2023
We recently said goodbye to our spring intern class. One of the best parts of our well-established internship program is seeing students launch careers from the experience they gained at Key Tech. We will miss all of our spring interns; wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
Daniel Im- Electrical Engineering Intern from Johns Hopkins University (first on left)
This spring I worked on: Control systems, data visualization, product testing, PCB debugging, and electronics prototyping.
My favorite assignment was: Architecture brainstorming and prototyping for a modular fluidic device.
Something I will remember about Key Tech: The people! I still find it hard to believe that such a welcoming work environment exists, mostly thanks to the wonderful, talented employees here.
Baltimore is: A great place for seafood aficionados. I recommend you try the crab cakes.
Jordan Hornick- Mechanical Engineering Intern from UMBC (second from left)
This spring I worked on: A variety of tasks related to test fixture design, assembly jig design, assembly process improvement in the clean room, design concept testing, and instrument build support. I was able to contribute to three different projects throughout my internship, in addition to working on some internal tools and documentation support tasks.
My favorite assignment was: Working on adjusting the programming of a robot so that it dispensed properly aligned paths of UV adhesive onto the components being assembled. This was a task that required a lot of troubleshooting and some creativity to think outside the box. Once the robot was reliably following the intended adhesive paths for this project, I created an internal guide for programming the robot so that anyone at Key Tech could easily use it in the future for new applications.
Something I will remember about Key Tech: The people (and dogs) that make Key Tech’s culture so great. I really enjoyed the friendly competition at fun events such as the Pi Day competition and the laser tag Spring Fling. Everyone has been willing to help answer any questions I’ve had related to project work, and there is a great workplace practice of regularly sharing collective knowledge that helps everybody work more efficiently.
Baltimore is: Home! I grew up in the area, and I have always loved visiting the Inner Harbor, seeing shows at the Hippodrome, exploring the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium, and eating lots of Berger cookies. Working in Fed Hill has been nothing short of amazing over the past few months, and I genuinely get excited every time that I see a glimpse of the Baltimore skyline on my drive into the city.
Robert Propst- Mechanical Engineering Intern from the University of Maryland (second from right)
This spring I worked on: Building, testing, fixing, and learning about complex pneumatic checkout machines designed for QC testing of fluidic cartridges.
My favorite assignment was: Designing parts in CAD for quick-turn MJF printing.
Something I will remember about Key Tech: I think I’ll remember the people I’ve met more than anything. The work is challenging but my project team was both incredibly smart and surprisingly hilarious – genuinely some of the best people I’ve ever worked with.
Baltimore is: Home! It can be a little rough around the edges, but there’s a lot to love if you take the time to explore.
Liz Thieken- Industrial Design Intern from the University of Cincinnati (first on right)
This spring I worked on: Concept development, storyboard, and wireframing user experience. I also worked on improving in-house functionality for conference rooms and other devices.
My Favorite assignment was: Reviewing study details from actual users to take that information and compiling it to possible design solutions.
Something I will remember about Key Tech: All the doggos! Lots of pets were given!
Baltimore is: A large, exciting, and wonderful city with lots to do on the weekends.
