GramPro3 (GP3) Gram Staining Device

Hardy Diagnostics’ GP3 provides a reliable Gram stain to up to three simultaneous patient samples, in a form factor which could benefit small doctor’s offices through large-scale diagnostics facilities.  Key Tech was tasked with integrating their decolorization technology into an instrument with improved usability and reliability from prior generations.

Key Tech used the prior GramPro instrument’s workflow and slide holder design as starting points, ideated on different architectures and fluidic layouts, and designed an instrument that satisfied all functional requirements while constraining the cost to the end user.  The materials and device architecture were driven by the device reliability and user safety for working with the gram staining chemicals.  Key Tech performed usability assessments to design the tubing touchpoints, reagent loading workflow, and graphical user interface (GUI) features.  The Beta devices were designed such that minimal changes would be required to move into verification units.

Hardy Diagnostics is ramping up production of the GP3s and completing internal and external validations of the stainer with a variety of specimen types.
