Reflections of a High-School Intern

Being a high-school intern at Key Tech can be fun but sometimes a little tedious. One of my favorite projects here was when we were considering purchasing Solar Panels for the roof. I had to research what they did and how they worked and then I had to make a presentation as to why we should buy them and what good they would do. When I made the presentation in front of a group of about 5, it made me feel like I was not an intern but an actual employee. Also, it gave me needed work experience, because one day I will have to do this again in college or in the workplace. After that presentation, I had to start calling companies, setting up meetings, getting all the important info, and eventually getting quotes. It was all very fun.

Another project that was another good learning experience and also fun was when I had to wire some RJ-45 cables and then put them in a wall jack. That was a pretty fun task. I also got to solder some wires together so they would work on a specific machine. I was a little surprised that they asked me to do that because I’m only in high school. They trusted me, and that is what mattered the most.

Interning at Key Tech has shown me a lot of things, like how a workplace is run and what you do there. It is a fun experience and you learn a lot of things. What I like the most is seeing these weird contraptions around the office and finding out what they are. It’s just cool to see people working on machines that one day you may see out in a store or you may even see someone who has that piece of equipment. What’s cool about that is you see the object in the making and even helped out with it a little.

The people who work here are all very nice and willing to help you with pretty much anything you ask them, whether it’s related to school or work. Eric is a pretty cool mentor. He helps me out with a lot of stuff, and he is easy to relate to in certain things. He’s even offered to help me learn guitar. Some of the stuff I do here even helps me out with my schoolwork, because I major in IT. I’ve installed engineering applications over a network, setup wireless routers, dissected a server, and even set up a local network.

Over my three years here, I was never really bored with the work that I had except for one time when I had to read papers (it felt like a million papers) and then make sure the documents on the computer were the same. It had to be done, and that was only one time out of a ton of other projects, so it kind of offset that one boring project. But other than that I have never been really bored.

This has been a very good, fun, learning experience for me. I had something to do after school. I learned a lot of stuff. I had a fun time. And, I got to see what it was like to work in a business environment. My experience at Key Tech will help me fill out my college applications and build my resume. This internship has given me a good idea of what the workplace is like and it was an excellent opportunity. I’m very fortunate.
