20 Apr You Can’t Please Everyone (and Why You Shouldn’t Try)
Your current and potential customers are out there, and they’re waiting for a product to help them do a job better. And, while these customers may have a specialized problem, you may have just the expertise to make the perfect product. However, if you try to create a product that everybody will want, you may end up with something nobody will want.
“You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” – Abraham Lincoln
It’s tempting to try to expand your customer base by changing the set of features to reach more customers, but it’s a trap. Your customers want a product that solves their problem. It doesn’t matter how universal the product may be to the rest of your customers. If your offering doesn’t meet their needs, they’ll keep looking for an alternative. It may be best to offer alternative versions to your own product to meet the needs of smaller groups more exactly than you can meet those of the whole group.
